7 News Values

Part 1

New objects sighted as Flight 370 search shifts dramatically

3.28.14 11:32 A.M

  • I believe the "news value" that matches this article is Timeliness, because this is recent news.

Man injured by falling cement in downtown Austin
3.25.14
  • i believe the "news value" that matches this article is Impact, because this has an impact on everyone, they have to worry about "falling cement" crashing on them any minute. Something random like this happened to someone, which means it could happened to anyone else. This is something very unsafe and hazardous.

Deadly SXSW crash claims 4th life
3.27.14

  • I believe the "news value" that matches this article is Human Interest, because this is a very dramatic emotional struggle that catches people attention, this is obviously a hard time for the kids family.

http://www.statesman.com/news/news/crime-law/sxsw-crash-claims-4th-life/nfMnz/

January jones Goes Overboard With Major makeup, 80s-inspired Outfit on New York City Streets 3.28.14
  • I believe the "news value" that matches this story is Prominence, because celebrities are consider "newsworthy" because they are well known and people love to hear gossip on their favorite actor/actress/singer.

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news

NCAA Tournament 2014: Winners and Losers of Day 7
3.28.14

  • I believe the "news value" that matches this article is Conflict, because basketball tournaments are well know for their competitive spirit which could lead to many conflicts with opposing forces.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2008708-ncaa-tournament-2014-winners-and-losers-of-day-7?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial&hpt=hp_t2

Teen Gets a Tattoo of WHAT??
3.27.14
  • I believe the "news value"that matches this news event is Novelty, because people are attracted to weird things such as this incident where a teen gets a tattoo of a McDonalds Receipt.
http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/living/2014/03/27/pkg-moos-mcdonalds-receipt-tattoo.rb-no.html

Court puts Father in Charge of son on Life Support in Round Rock hospital 3.27.14

Part 2

Stupidest:
Web Has fun with Kim and Kanye's photo
http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/showbiz/2014/03/28/fod-youre-welcome-episode-6-kanye-kim-kardashian-candy-crush-gwenyth-paltrow.funny-or-die.html

  • This is most stupid because Kim and Kanye or another celebrity should not be any kind of news. Especially this. More important news could have been aired instead of this.

Most Important:
Rare Tornadoes hit Northern California
http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2014/03/28/vo-funnel-clouds-tornadoes-in-california.kcra.html
  • This is most impacting because lives could have been lost a lot of injured people without homes. This tornado could terrorize a to of lives.

Magazine Covers pt2

Understanding Magazines:

Early magazine covers

The popular Peterson's women's magazine of 1872 uses a completely common cover well decorated with the leafy border of proper embroidery, with a pleasant collection of drawings at the bottom indicating the many aspects of woman in the family.

The Poster Cover:

The Boston magazine of May 2013 is a praise towards the April 15 bombing at the Boston Marathon .  This magazine cover uses the assembly of different colors and brands of shoes to put together a tribute to the resiliency of runners, the marathon, and the city. To seem more heart felt, the shoes are arranged in the shape of a heart and in the center of the collage of shoes is the phrase "We Will Finish This Race".

Pictures Married to Type:

In the December 2009 Vibe magazine, the audience it would attract would be music lovers, most likely in the genre of R&B and listen to Eminem, lil Wayne, Jay-z, and DMX. The main image (Eminem) is stood straight to the camera to show off his tattoos and try to give an overall image of a ‘hard man’. This image will bring in fans of the artist and make them want to buy the magazine as there is an article about him that may be of interest to the fan.

In the Forest of Words:

In the March 2009 Elle magazine, they fill their center image with Jessica alba to catch the attention  of people. To keep the viewers reading they have put their cover lines all over the magazine, almost like a collage, so you can't miss it. Magazines find ways to tempt you read celebrities gossip and find fun facts on how to lose weight and whats up in the fashion trend these days.

Model credit: is right beside the model but doesn't attract too much attention, only to credit the model
Bar code: used for retailers
Main cover line: it promotes something big
Left third: just to not fill up the page to much (leave some space)

Blog #2

Favorite:
This cover of National Geographic magazine is entitled, "Conversations With a Gorilla," with Koko the gorilla snapping a photograph of her reflection in the mirror. The photo was of such high quality and significance that it was chosen to be the cover photo for the October 1978 National Geographic article featuring Koko. Developmental psychologist Francine Patterson spent six years with Koko teaching her sign language and this led Patterson and other researchers to believe Koko displayed evidence of linguistic capabilities.
I like this photo of the Gorilla because i find animals very fascinating. I think they are very intelligent animals and this magazine cover, expresses the intelligence in animals. They communicate this thought of animals being extraordinary by showing a gorilla holding a camera in a position that makes it look like he's about to take a picture.

Year in Review: 2013

Part 1: Best Photos of 2013

This is one of my favorite photos because I've always wanted to travel to see amazing beautiful things such as this.
In this photo i think a rule that might apply would be viewpoint. The exposure quality in this photo is partly cloudy because of the weather at the time, but it's mostly light.

This is one of my favorite photos because this caught my interest, it kind of tripped me out. I love the illusion in the picture.  A rule that might apply to this photo would be background. The exposure quality is light.

This is one of my favorite photos because it represents the power that women also have in this world. A rule that is in the photo is balancing elements, repetition, and maybe mergers. The exposure quality is dark.

Part 2: Your Favorites

1. What was the best song of 2013?

I chose this not necessarily because i liked it more than any other only because this song reminds me of memories i hope to never forget. And a person i love more than anything. But it was better than most other songs because it has a pure meaning.

2. What was the best movie of 2013?

I chose this movie because it so freaking hilarious. Everything about the movie was funny, i just know i would buy it and watch over and over and never regret buying it. But their were really good movies besides this one, i just couldn't make a choice.

3. What was the most important news story of the year?

Boston Marathon terror attack
i thought this was an important news story of the year 2013 because a terrorist attack is scary. This story seemed very powerful and random. Knowing that a terrorist attack could happen at any time is scary.

4. Who was the most important person of 2013

I chose her because she is a very inspiring person, she proves that you don't have to shape yourself into what people want you to be in order to fit in. She's the best of 2013 because she is a role model to many people.

5. What was the biggest sports OR entertainment story/person of 2013?

I chose this tv show out of the other ten because this is a great story with great actors who play their parts well.  i was attracted to this story because it's my favorite tv show :) in my opinion it was best of 2013

Part 3: Your Holiday and Hopes for 2014

1. Tell me what is the one thing that happened on your holiday that you will remember? It can be a trip, a family visit, a present, something fun.

  • My break was amazing because my friends came down from Arizona and stay with me all two weeks. i enjoyed my time with them and i had the best time of my life.
2. What are your resolutions for 2014? If you need inspiration check this out: http://mashable.com/2014/01/04/new-years-resolution-photos/

  • I've never really been the type to be into the "new years resolution", but i guess it would be to be more involved with things like, going out more and doing stuff instead of just stain at home all the time.

3. What are you looking forward to in 2014?

  • Well in my opinion, in 2013 i just felt that was an unhappy year a lot of sad things happened to many people, a lot of deaths. i guess 2014 is to start fresh, i feel like its a chance to make things better in general and for anyone or anything.
